During my research I have come across a news article that talks of a UFO sighting before the Kenneth Arnold sighting. According to the Pittsburgh Press dated August 3, 1952, a man named Donald Bunce who lived near Erie, Pa Saw a glowing object streak through the sky and land in a cow pasture. The date was June 21, 1947. The article goes on to state that Mr. Bunce recovered the object and put it in his car. It was oval shaped and about 5 inches long. Mr. Bunce soon forgot about the object. After hearing of the Arnold sighting, Mr. Bunce remembered the object and took it to a scientist at Gannon College in Erie, PA. The scientist stated, as close as he could tell, it was Scoria. Scoria is solidified rock froth from a volcano. The Newspaper ends the article stating "A perfectly good explanation except there isn't a volcano within 3000 miles of that cow pasture". There was also an article from 1947 in the same Newspaper with this story.
It would be interesting to find out whether this object still exists. It reminds me of the Maury Island case. In that case there were some strange "rock" like substance ejected from a UFO. Although I am highly skeptical of that particular case, one must consider the similarities.
